Adventures in Breastfeeding

Two weeks ago, I received a phone call from a local school district asking if I could sub at their elementary school for three days. I arranged for a babysitter and took the position, but then the worry set in. Teaching for three days meant that my kids would be in the care of another individual. I had been home since December with Ellie and I have yet to leave Grant for more than 4 hours.

That first night after accepting the job, I was unable to sleep. There was so much that needed to be done - the house needed cleaned, the laundry needed done, the kids' rooms needed straightened up, our "schedule" needed to be written down, I needed to go grocery shopping, and worst of all, Grant needed to learn how to drink from a bottle!

I can count on both hands the number of times I'd tried to get Grant to drink from a bottle. I had tried to get him to take it the first time after successfully breastfeeding for six weeks. Aaron's firm's party was coming up and I'd have to leave Grant for the night with my parents. Since Aaron was in the midst of tax season when Grant was born, he was unable to be home to help feed bottles and Grant is no dummy when it comes to the bottle vs. boob debate. Grant screamed for the few hours that I was out of the house that night...and I was afraid my parents would never offer to watch the kids again.

Since I was unable to find a full-time teaching job for this school year, I've continued breastfeeding exclusively. There's no need for a bottle when your food source is always around. I enjoy breastfeeding so much - the snuggles, the closeness, the warm and satisfied baby. I never had that with Ellie and I don't know if I'll ever experience it again. I'm thankful that I have had this opportunity and I'm willing to continue until Grant chooses to wean himself.

Anyway, last Monday was my first day away. A few hours into it, my sitter started texting me - Grant won't take a bottle. He's screaming. He won't eat his fruit and cereal. All he'll eat is puffs, etc. My heart was broken. I was stuck at this school for nine hours away from my baby. The kids were horrible, the sub plans were scrawled out in a bulleted list that she complied from other teachers' plans (right in front of me - 10 minutes before the kids arrived), and I was physically in pain because I couldn't nurse my baby boy.

Pumping and I don't get along. It was helpful in the early weeks when I faced engorgement, but I haven't had a need to use it since. No sense stockpiling the freezer with bags of milk when the baby won't drink it. That right there is a perfectly good reason to cry over spilt milk. Breastfeeding is hard, don't let anyone tell you any different, but it is truly amazing and worth the effort.

The first two days, I had two separate breaks - one during lunch and one during their special (gym or music, etc.). Last Wednesday, I had one break because lunch and special were scrunched together into one block of time. Add into there that I took the kids to lunch late and there was a bunch of papers that HAD to be graded during the kids' special, I had one 20-minute break to pump and then scarf food down on my way back to the classroom.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I do not enjoy being away from my kiddos even though I get caught up in it and wish for some adult interaction during the day/some free time for mama, but yes, it felt good to actually get dressed with hair and make up and yes, it felt good to be back in the classroom. Subbing was not as scary as I feared it would be, but a different schedule everyday is very difficult for new mamas that are exclusively breastfeeding.

Updates

  • Aaron and I went out to dinner at Granite City Brewery on Saturday night. Good food, but I was full from the appetizer. Ate a few bites of my burger, but it was a little too pink for my "pregnant palate."
  • We started our baby registry after dinner. It made it more real for the both of us. It felt good to finally get something accomplished.
  • Sunday was a "catch-up" day. I planned and graded papers for school while Aaron worked in the nursery. The flooring is almost finished! It looks very nice in there.
  • Monday was a half-day at school. Aaron was out of town for training so I went to the OB alone. Lost another 1.5 pounds, down a total of 4.0 pounds. Doctor also informed me that I have a low-lying placenta. I'll have another ultrasound in 5 weeks to check its placement.

Busy Bee

I've been doing my student teaching internship at a local elementary school. I love second grade, but it consumes every waking moment of every day. I'll keep posting my pregnancy highlights on Fridays, but its going to be rather sparse until things calm down around here.

I had my first observation yesterday. My lesson was on friendly letters and it went wonderfully. My university mentor only had great things to say. In many ways, I'm sad that I'll be done teaching in December, but in other ways I am thankful to have the spring to myself and my family.

Looking forward to Monday as we will be finalizing Ellie's adoption. It has definitely been a long year and we are so thrilled to finally become a forever family. I'm trying to plan something special. I'm thinking we'll have a small luncheon on Monday and then a big celebration on the weekend. She's such a special girl and deserves to celebrate this special time in her life!

Methods, Spring 2010

I'm so worried about school next semester. I'll be away from home 55 hours per week, plus homework/projects/units to work on at night and on the weekends. I don't know how we're going to make it through this. Everything and everyone will be taking a back burner to school.

Fall Break

Today I cleaned the office while Aaron was at work. When he got home, we headed out to dinner at TGIFriday's. It's been a while since we've dined out together. Ran a few errands and now we're home.

Tomorrow, we're heading up to the lake house and outlet malls. I'm taking a meal to my parents who are already at the lake - Loaded Baked Potato Soup, biscuits, salad and pumpkin pie. I'm looking forward to it!

Monday and Tuesday I have off from school for Fall Break. I have some homework, housework and painting to finish up.

Hello

I'm still around, it's just been incredibly busy around here. Aaron has tax deadlines the 15 of every month, our family dynamic has changed a bit, I stopped teaching band and piano, but went back to school. I'm in the midst of preschool practicum this semester, then methods and student teaching will follow. One week down, 15 to go.

It's been cold and rainy around here; we only had 2-3 weeks of real summer heat. Tonight starts local high school football season. I never enjoyed football in the rain, but I'll be there to announce the pre-game and halftime show. I really stepped down my commitment, and it's hard since I've done marching band, member and instructor, every fall for the past 10 years!

Lonely Week

Aaron is out of town for business training, so it's kind of slow around here. He leaves extremely early in the morning and returns late at night. Putting lots of mileage on my little Honda. Training is close enough that he can drive daily, but the hours almost make me wish he could stay there - it's not quite far enough for the company to splurge on a hotel room.

In other news, one month till I return to school. Most of my summer was taken up by a class I had to take and get out of the way before Field Blocks. I'll have 15-hours on campus in the classroom and 120 total hours that I'll need to complete in the preschool setting.

Summer School

I had to take a Human Movement class this summer and thankfully the six-week course is almost over. Lots of homework this summer, but only three days left of class. I don't mind the class so much, but my drive time equals the time spent in class which can only be described as a bummer.

Today is the Greatest, Day I've Ever Lived

*Lyrics compliments of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Today ends Tax Season and I cannot be more thankful. It's been extremely stressful around here with Aaron putting in 12+ hours a day Monday through Saturday and the occasional Sunday. There's a party tonight to celebrate.

I'm excited for today but even more so for next week. Aaron has two CPA exams within three days. STRESSFUL! I have two weeks of class left plus finals weeks to contend with. We're in the homestretch, yay!

Footloose the Musical

Working on a musical right now, in the orchestra. A little too much is on my plate right now. Will be back after this weekend is over. See you then!!

The Story of Us

01. Girl meets Guy on a football field during marching band practice. She's young, still in middle school, he's a sophomore on the snare line. She's preoccupied with other boys, he's in a serious relationship. Two years pass and his girlfriend left for the summer to tour with a drum and bugle line. Girl and Guy spend every waking moment together - on the phone, hanging out, instant messaging or at church.

At the end of the summer, Girl takes Guy to see his girlfriend at a local tour stop. Guy reconnects with girlfriend ... Girl is hurt, but doesn't let it show. They all go back to school in the fall. He graduates and eventually comes back as an instructor when Girl is a senior. Guy breaks up with girlfriend, Girl breaks up with boyfriend. And one night after a football game, they shared a magical kiss in the parking lot.

That Guy would be Aaron, my husband and that Girl would be me, Lindsay. We met nine years ago in marching band. Now, we both are instructors for that marching band. We graduated from the same high school and we'll graduate from the same university. He graduated last year in August as Summa Cum Laude of his Accounting class. Nine days later, he started his job with the accounting firm he interned for. I go to school full-time, majoring in Early Childhood Education and will graduate in December 2010.

Spring Break

I'm on break this week. Most kids are going away - Cancun, the Bahamas, etc. I'm at home, in NW Ohio, supposed to be catching up on school work, but playing housekeeper instead.

A and I cleaned out both livings rooms last night, in the middle of a storm system that was creating tornados. Ran the sweeper 10 million times between last night and this morning. The carpets and furniture will be cleaned today. Hoping to paint both living rooms by the end of the week. Maybe write some lesson plans and an ethnography paper too.

**********

Updated to add: The painting of the house will have to wait to summer. The walls have been stark white for six years, what's another couple of months?! Instead, I'll be doing this for the rest of the week:
  • watch three movies, then write 10 pg. ethnography paper (in progress)
  • 3 online discussions (2/3)
  • write out my teaching philosophy (in progress)
  • film and upload my teaching philosophy
  • rate a website for tech. class (done)
  • cognitive lesson plan (done)
  • socio-emotional lesson plan (in progress)
  • execute and reflect on lesson plans
  • create, execute and reflect on prop box
  • write a lesson plan for a different class (out of my hands, onto another group member)
  • sub. on saturday
  • host shower on sunday
  • return to school on monday

Pizza Rounds

In an effort to cut back, I've been cooking at home even on nights when I just don't feel like it. Tonight was one of those nights. I spent my first day in a kindergarten classroom for a field experience and it was horrible. LOVE the kids, but the staff could use a dose of friendly. Hubs said I could order a pizza, but we had the ingredients in the cupboard for pizza bagels.

Bagels or English Muffins, halved and toasted
Pizza Sauce
Fresh Mozzarella
Pepperoni

Arrange toasted bread on a cookie sheet. Top with sauce, cheese and toppings. Broil in oven until toasty. Kid friendly, husband approved.

Let it snow!!

So that I don't have to drive 40 miles to school in hazardous conditions.

BGSU cancelled classes till 1 pm.
BGSU cancelled classes till 5 pm.
Prof. cancelled 6 pm class.

*****************

I dug out the sidewalk today, then snowblowed the six-car driveway, showered, grocery shopped, did laundry and dishes, napped and made dinner.  Way more productive than a regular school day.

-40*

It's forty below with the wind chill, and I can't get my car to start.  I've missed three classes this week at BGSU and it's only the first week.

Updated to add :: Called AAA, they'll be here in 6 hours to jump my car and possibly tow.

Swing of Things

I started back to school yesterday. I suppose I wouldn't mind it so much if I didn't have to commute an hour. Going back five days a week this semester. So far, two of five classes require field hours. There just aren't enough hours in the day! This morning, I left at 6:30 am for an 8:30 class - I was so exhausted I barely could keep my eyes open.

Husband is no good at getting up in the morning. He likes to let his alarm go off forever, hit snooze a million times and stash the clock under the covers or pillows, etc. It is somewhat annoying, as I hop out of bed as soon as my clock goes off. I poke and prod, trying to get him up and out of bed, but it only makes him pissy. But let me tell you, waking up hours before I have to be up and then getting a cold shower doesn't do much for my cheery disposition.

Aaron's been up late every night and getting up early, lately. His first CPA exam is this Thursday. I hope this pays off and he passes. He feels pressured since two of the four new hires have passed all four sections ... on their first try.
